Absolute Return's annual survey on the likely winners of tomorrow among the smaller funds

Guts. That's what investors better have if they're going to deploy money in 2008, especially if they are looking for growth in addition to safety. As always, big names and big firms stand the best chance of raising capital, but younger and smaller upstarts continue to be the place to look for greater compounding.

Each year, Absolute Return profiles some of the most talented small fund managers in our annual "funds to watch" survey, which focuses on outfits with less than $500 million in capital. In the past, we've sniffed out such winners as the Agamas Continuum Master Fund and Kyle Bass's Hayman Capital Master Fund, up 27.3% and 204.89%, respectively, in 2007.

Many of last year's picks were slammed by the credit crunch, which the markets still haven't completely escaped....
