A dog's life

June 01, 2009

York Capital Management chief compliance officer Mark Schein had a bone to pick with the co-op board of his East 71st Street luxury building after board members tried to prevent him and his wife from following a doctor's suggestion that they get a dog as a companion for 11-year-old son, who has Asperger's syndrome. Two years after the couple applied for an exception to have a dog, the co-op board presented them with 14 conditions to be met, such as a ten-pound limit for the dog and an additional $1 million insurance policy for their apartment. After the Scheins filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the government successfully sued the building's owner, arguing that the restrictions violated the Americans with Disabilities Act, enabling the Scheins to finally get their dog.
