Ken Griffin’s Citadel Investment Group is rebuilding its global equities team after laying off 10 staffers earlier this year. The firm has hired former Level Global Investors partner Jeffrey Messina as a portfolio manager focusing on San Francisco industrials. The global equities division contributes to the firm’s flagship multistrategy funds Kensington Global Strategies and Wellington, which were down about 3% through June 30.
Messina most recently worked as director of research at Archeroak Capital, which he joined late last year. Archeroak was launched by Brian Cohn, an alumnus of SAC Capital Advisors. Prior to Archeroak, Messina spent six years at Level Global. Archeroak could not be reached for comment by press time.
Other recent hires this month to the global equities group include Evan Hornbuckle, formerly a portfolio manager for Fidelity Investments, who joined as a consumer-stock analyst; and Anar Ismailov, previously an analyst at GEM Realty of Chicago, who joined as a REIT associate. Citadel confirmed the hires.
As of midyear, Citadel managed $11 billion in assets, down from $12 billion in January.
